Theatre Poster

Print Design

Design Problem

The design challenge was to create a theatrical poster for A Midsummer Night’s Dream that captured the play’s magical and romantic atmosphere while appealing to contemporary audiences. The aim was to communicate the story’s whimsical tone and fantasy setting through a hand-drawn illustration that could translate effectively into a promotional print design.

Concept Development

I explored a variety of traditional mediums including graphite pencil, watercolour and white pastel on black paper. These allowed me to experiment with tone, contrast and layering. The imagery focused on two central elements: a large donkey head and a fairy like female figure, representing the play’s most recognisable characters.

Design Solution

After scanning the illustrations, I imported them into Adobe Photoshop where I digitally enhanced colour vibrancy and texture. By layering the different versions together, I achieved a rich, mixed-media effect. The background combined a tree bark texture with hand-drawn crayon elements to symbolise the forest setting. The final poster composition was carefully balanced to feel dynamic yet harmonious.
